Scallan Renewables

Ed ScallanIn this week’s Business Spotlight we’d like to present one of our long-standing Tayside businesses,  Scallan Renewables, who has been trading now for 25 years.

Scallan Renewables offers eco-friendly renewable energy systems to homes and businesses. Some of the systems designed and installed include solar PV panels, generating electricity, solar thermal panels (which generate hot water), wood pellet stoves and burners as well as a range of more conventional appliances such as water boilers and alternatives to storage heaters.

Ed and David also hold the bragging rights of Scallan Renewables being the only installer in Tayside to be accredited in the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), for all renewable technologies except wind and water power.

We put a few questions to Ed, read on to hear his story.

Business owner: Ed and David Scallan

Date business started: 1990

Business location: 8/10 Langlands Street  Dundee, DD4 6SZ

1. What did you do before you started your business?

I was a lecturer in plumbing heating and building services.

2. What drew you towards your field of business?

I realised there was a lack of knowledgeable tradesmen in the field and felt that it was a gap I could fill.

Scallan Renewables3. What hurdles and challenges have you faced in getting to the stage you are currently at?

We experienced a lack of support from banks. Despite Renewables being used successfully worldwide, it’s still difficult to get the message across that they are the way forward both economically & environmentally.

4. What aspect of your business have you taken the most pride in since you started?

We are proud to have many long standing customers who often recommend Scallan Renewables to others. We are particularly proud when contracted to do larger prestige jobs such as installing heating into a castle.

5. Do you have any entertaining stories or experiences since starting your business, unexpected events, or interesting developments?

One of the funnier moments was when David was “attacked” by a chicken while we were working on a job at a chicken farm.

6. What do you love about running your business? Or the sector you work in?

We really like the constant challenge that comes with the work we do.

7. What plans do you have for the future of your business?

We’d like to keep trying to get the word out about the benefits of renewable systems, and keep encouraging more customers to install green energy systems.
