Business Spotlight – ‘Get Hyped’ with Stas!

This week, our Enterprise Business Spotlight casts its beam onto a rapidly rising Dundee based business, Get Hyped.

Get Hyped - a creative and marketing business, founded and run by Stas Rumanjancevs, is an example of a business that has been helped by Enterprise North East Trust in a variety of ways.

Stas knew that he wanted to be his own boss, rather than follow the graduate route of employment like many of his friends early on. His business concept was that with many people around him going into creative industries, he could bring them all together, acting as a mediator to deliver visual services to businesses in Scotland.

The Enterprise Gym and Birth of Get Hyped

‘Get Hyped’ was launched in August 2012 shortly after Stas graduated with a degree in Town Planning at the University of Dundee. By November 2012 Get Hyped had joined Dundee University’s Incubator Programme, run with the backing of the University’s Enterprise Gym.

The Enterprise Gym is managed by students for students and is supported by experienced business patrons, one of whom is our Chief Executive Gary McEwan who is a member of the Enterprise Gym management board. The Enterprise Gym runs free workshops and events to develop students’ entrepreneurial skills and commercial awareness.

Stas successfully presented Get Hyped's business plan to judges for the Incubator Programme and was awarded 12 months support, a mentor and office space, as well as funding. The funding was provided by Enterprise North East Trust, which is an established partner of the programme.

The connection between Enterprise and Dundee University is well established. CEO of Enterprise and Enterprise Gym board member Gary said:

“Enterprise North East Trust is a strong supporter of entrepreneurial development within the University of Dundee. Working closely with the Enterprise Gym and a range of student businesses to increase the impact enterprising skills can have on employability and the development of tomorrow's entrepreneurs.”

“This University has great ambition and aims to be Scotland's leading university. We at Enterprise North East Trust will certainly do all we can to help The University of Dundee become the leading entrepreneurial university in Scotland”

Stas works through ‘Get Hyped’ with a number of freelancers, giving the company a versatility allowing any business visual request to be met with the most effective end product. Get Hyped's work can take the form of websites, graphic design, photography and videotography.

A Challenging Weekend

Stas benefitted from another Enterprise North East Trust opportunity in June of 2013 when he took part in the Enterprise Challenge Weekend. This annual programme takes young 'entrepreneurial sparks' out of their usual comfort zone, and into the great outdoors to take on a series of challenging (and wet and muddy!) tasks, all with a business focus looking at team building, management skills, task focus, attention to details and problem solving

About taking part in the Enterprise Challenge, Stas said:

“The Enterprise Challenge weekend was actually very tough both physically and mentally. I got to meet lots of interesting guys and girls. It made me focus on various transferrable entrepreneurial skills in a fun and challenging way, and got me thinking about how to overcome everyday business obstacles from a different point of view.”

Simon Fraser, Project Manager at Enterprise North East Trust added:

"Having worked with Stas for a number of years through different enterprising activities, challenge is something he has never shyed away from. Without any formal business training, becoming his own boss has been a big learning curve".

Stas also highlights these challenges in getting Get Hyped up and running:

“I didn’t get a degree in business or business training, so I'm learning every day about business little by little as I go. This is one of the greatest challenges; it’s not a classroom exercise. It was often a tough time. Sometimes I would think ‘should I have done it, was this a mistake?  But I didn’t leave it because I think  you can’t succeed if you don’t overcome the challenges”

"I have had the pleasure of  working with the Enterprise North East Trust team for several months now. The guys in the team have helped me with a number of aspects of my business including skills development and business networking. They have always been there when I needed it.”

The Present and Future of Get Hyped

Stas has had some further recognition, recently presenting at the Baltic Dynamics International Conference of Business Development and Innovation. His presentation subject examined business development and innovation within a Scottish arena, and how academia and business can work together to improve the economy. One of Stas’ contractors, Liga, also became a finalist for Women Ahead’s Woman of the Year Award.

Additionally, Stanislav business journey has taken a full circle as he now volunteers as a Business Mentor with Young Enterprise, helping students like himself to develop their business ideas.

Stas already has big ambitions for the future, he says:

“We will be looking to expand, including opening up operations and an office in Aberdeen and breaking the corporate world, taking on bigger jobs and clients”.
